“Is it really you?” Kate asked.

“Yes, my loving wife, it’s me,” J.D. replied. “I see you haven’t wasted any time finding someone to replace me.”

Kate recoiled, stung by J.D.’s unfair accusation. “I thought you were dead!” She was still reeling from his sudden appearance, so dizzy she thought she might vomit. She pressed a hand flat against the wall to keep herself upright and swallowed the bile in her throat.

“How is this possible?” she gasped. “There was proof—DNA evidence—that the remains I buried were yours.”

He shoved up his folded shirtsleeve and showed her a missing hunk of muscle, a gouge in his forearm that had scarred over, then pulled up his pants leg and showed a corresponding scar on his calf. “There was a chunk or two of me in the mix, all right.” He rubbed his fingers together, the universal sign for money, and said, “It’s amazing how persuasive cold, hard cash can be when you need lab results to turn out a certain way.”

“Who was it I buried? Who was it my sons mourned?”
